Co founders, Nicole and Julie, met through the Junior League of Lancaster in 2014, initially with a professional connection. At the time they didn’t anticipate their varying backgrounds would unite them in the common goal of changing the world for girls.
Nicole, a registered dietitian since 2004, focuses on helping individuals overcome disordered eating. She has worked in the hospital setting, residential treatment setting, and owns a boutique private practice, Mid Atlantic Nutrition Specialists. She strives to help individuals recover from the damage disordered eating and negative self concept create. Julie completed her Master’s in Early Childhood and Elementary Education in 2007and taught for seven years before transitioning into a position directing pre school programs. She began teaching yoga in 2007 to children and adults in various settings. She is now a co-owner and ERYT at Evolution Power Yoga. Julie encourages all to get out of their minds and into their bodies, so they can live and serve fully in the here and now.
On My Mat (OMM) developed from shared passions to create change. Julie founded the local Eating Disorders Anonymous Group as a way to give back to the community after her 13 year battle with Anorexia and welcomed Nicole as a guest speaker; through this connection a friendship developed. At the inception of On My Mat, the co-founders came to these realizations: We are lovestruck by our daughters’ perfection, and their complete ownership of it, at ages 8 months and 5 years. We must empower them to hold onto this greatness! We want to make a space for our girls and all girls to have unconditional appreciation for and confidence in their bodies.
When ideas shifted into action, Nicole and Julie took to the beach with 6 kids between them. They grounded toes in the sand and began to create the program. Ideas effortlessly poured onto an old notebook, construction paper, and anything else they could find in the bottom of their beach bags. Julie and Nicole formed a formal LLC In September of 2016 to support and structure the program and has since developed into a non-profit organization. We are currently in our second Winter season and working within the School District of Lancaster and have also launched our Pre-School On My Mat Program in the Winter of 2017.
In the winter of 2018, Julie Mathers took on the role of Executive Director and has appointed a wonderful Board of Directors who help to carry and promote the mission, vision, and core values of On My Mat. As Executive Director, Julie works to establish sponsor relationships within the community, such as with Fulton Bank, and continues to work with Lupeer Advertising Agency to advance all social media outreach efforts. Mathers plans to host a youth yoga teacher training in the next two years.
